Call for global emergency education fund

published 29 January 2015 updated 6 February 2015

Education International has declared its support for a global emergency education fund to be established for children who are out of school because of conflict, disease, or natural disasters.

The call for such a fund was issued on 26 January by United Nations Education Envoy, Gordon Brown.

From Gaza and Iraq to Colombia, South Sudan and Thailand, refugees and internally displaced children all deserve hope and opportunity at the onset of a humanitarian crisis

“We need an emergency fund for education when there are humanitarian crises,” Brown said. “A child needs hope and education and a future.” Education cannot wait, he stressed.

At the World Bank Spring meetings in April, Brown will reiterate the call for governments to commit more resources to an emergency education fund and he hopes to formally announce its establishment at an Oslo education summit in July.

#UpForSchool

Acknowledging that world leaders promised to get every child into school by 2015 but progress has stalled, and to ensure quality education for all children, Education International is involved with “A World at School” and the #UpForSchool petition.

This global petition demands that all children around the world are in school and learning - millions of children are still forced out of school because of child labour, child marriage, and discrimination Attacks on schools and schoolchildren are on the increase.
