Global pledge launched to end child slavery
The Global March Against Child Labour is rallying its partners around the world to mark tomorrow’s International Day for the Abolition of Slavery to free the millions of children forced to work.
To coincide with the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on 2 December, the Global March Against Child Labour is kick starting its “ End Child Slavery Week.” With upwards of 5.5 million children forced to work, the Global March is launching a worldwide pledge to end slavery with a social media campaign through HeadTalker set to send a wave of tweets, Facebook, LinkedIn and Tumblr posts from supporters far and wide.
A close partner of Education International (EI), the Global March would like to give everyone a voice who wants child slavery brought to a halt.
"Slavery is unacceptable and EI will always remain committed to actions and policies aimed at ending child labour, abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence and torture against children by realising the right of all children to quality and free public education," said EI Deputy General Secretary Haldis Holst. "This is EI’s commitment to social justice and human rights in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030."
With the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) now a reality, EI committed to ridding the world of child labour at its recent World Congress to ensure that all children have the opportunity at a quality education.
