Education International expresses its deep sympathy with the victims of the massive earthquake that struck China on Monday at 14:28 local time with a magnitude of 7.9.

Education International is deeply concerned by the current situation in Burma caused by the cyclone Nargis and consequent flooding. EI deplores the reluctance of the Burmese authorities to facilitate the delivery of aid so urgently needed by the people of the regions most severely hit.

EI sends its condolences to the family and friends of the victims of the Peruvian earthquake, which took place just off the coast of the country on 15 August.

On 30 June, EI fulfilled its promise to the people of Aceh, Indonesia, that it would assist in the rebuilding of the public education system for thousands of children whose schools were destroyed by the devastating tsunami of December 2004.

On 30 June, with the delivery of the last chair to a new elementary school in Aceh, EI fulfilled its promise to the Acehnese people given two and a half years ago that it would rebuild 28 of its schools.

The Tsunami Student Tour has been a life-changing experience for the participants of the EI Tsunami Student Tour to Aceh, Indonesia, from 19-24 February 2007. Below is a summary of the feedback they gave EI after returning from the tour.

EI has organised a tour for twelve students from Japan, Australia, the UK and the Netherlands to the tsunami-hit areas of Aceh in Indonesia from 19-24 February. The students were selected from schools which contributed to the EI Solidarity Fund for the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme.

By the end of September this year, teachers and children in the tsunami-hit areas of Indonesia in the Aceh province have access to 8 brand new fully-furnished and well-equipped elementary schools built under the EI-Novib Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme. And there will be 20 more to come.
