published 19 May 2008 updated 19 May 2008

The 2nd National Seminar on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) /AIDS, organised by the Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Educação (CNTE) between March 31 – April 2, 2008, provided an opportunity for debate and progress on themes related to the EFAIDS programme.

The event gathered representatives from over 20 states across Brazil and enabled them to consult with union representatives who work on health promotion in schools. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Ministries for Education and Health. Discussions centred on how to best combat AIDS and have a maximum impact through educational activities.

Juçara Dutra Vieira, vice-president of Education International, emphasised the influence classroom activities could have in promoting health. Dutra Vieira stated , “We believe that amongst the expanding role of the school there should be an effort to bring new perspectives to safeguard the health of our students, our school community and our educational workers”.
