published 30 July 2008 updated 30 July 2008

Mor Mbengue, Deputy Secretary General of the Senegalese Union Démocratique des Enseignantes et des Enseignants du Sénégal (UDEN) travelled to Bamako, Mali to share his knowledge of the new EFAIDS toolkits with Malian colleagues. Forty national facilitators of the Malian Syndicat National de l’Education et de la Culture (SNEC) from eight regions participated in the workshop from 2-4 June.

As coordinator of the EFAIDS Programme in Sénégal, Mr Mbengue is ideally placed to introduce use of ‘ Building a Gender Friendly School Environment’ and ‘• Inclusion is the Answer: Unions involving and supporting educators living with HIV’.

The workshop was highly interactive and participants seized the opportunity to discuss and debate issues related to HIV/AIDS. A heated debate centering upon sexual orientation and the Malian context culminated with participants acknowledging the importance of frank discussion and respect of rights.

Mor Mbengue welcomed the opportunity to “directly share experiences arising from a similar context” with his counterparts from SNEC and praised the enthusiasm of SNEC members in preparing to lead subsequent workshops in their own regions.
