COPE releases a summary of 2010 activities

published 3 May 2011 updated 10 May 2011

The Council of Pacific Education (COPE), an EI affiliated umbrella body of teacher organisations in the Pacific, has published the Journal of the Pacific teacher union’s latest edition.

COPE Secretary General and EI Pacific Co-ordinator Govind Singh notes in his editorial that “global partners and Education International’s perseverance to develop democratic, independent and strong teacher organisations is acknowledged and pursed with zeal by the affiliates in the Pacific region.”

The newsletter covering events from last year’s second semester features, among others: the Code of Ethics adopted by teachers in the Pacific region, helping them deliver the highest standards of professional service towards their students; and the COPE 25th anniversary celebration on 8 December in Fiji, for which the International Labour Organisation’s Officer Laila Harré delivered the keynote address, acknowledging that “teacher unions are a substantial component of national trade union movements and enjoy many advantages when it comes to the [ILO] work for social justice.”

At the occasion of EI’s next World Congress, COPE will hold a meeting on 24 July 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa.
