The 43rd issue of Education International’s on-line magazine, Worlds of Education, has been published. The magazine is available at www.worldsofeducation.org.

Two themes shape this edition of Worlds of Education. The first reflects a key objective of Education International’s Unite for Quality Education campaign: Countries must create properly funded education systems which have coherent policies on the teaching profession which are agreed with teachers. Ensuring that every child is taught by a qualified teacher cannot be achieved without realising this goal.

The second theme examines the role of teacher unions and their relationship with governments in achieving policies which sustain and enhance the confidence of teachers. This has added relevance globally, as the recent International Summits on the Teaching Profession, which took place in New Zealand, has shown. The Summits’ continuing success depends on the ideas of mutual respect and joint action between teacher unions and governments.

The issue brings together articles by UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, Professor Dennis Shirley of Boston College, Professor Nina Bascia of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Datin Mahatir of the Malaysian AIDS Council, Dennis Van Roekel, President of the National Education Association in the US; Diane Woloschuk, President of the Canadian Federation of Teachers; John Bangs, Special Consultant at Education International; and Graham Clayton, Trustee of the Steve Sinnott Foundation.
