published 17 July 2020 updated 23 July 2020

Education union leaders and educators have paid tribute to the late Emanuel A Fatoma. Fatoma’s sudden passing on 6 July came as a shock to many of us and to his former colleagues and friends from Africa and around the world.

Education International General Secretary, David Edwards, described Fatoma as a distinguished EI coordinator, a stabilising force, a mentor and a go-to person who devoted all his working life to the service of teachers and students. Trade union leaders from across Africa and the world have recounted the immense contribution he made towards building strong and independent education unions and how he advocated for every child’s right to quality public education.

EI Chief Regional Coordinator for Africa, Dennis Sinyolo, said Fatoma would be remembered as a great teacher, trade unionist and education advocate who incessantly pursued social justice for all.

Fatoma will be laid to rest in Sierra Leone on Saturday 18 July 2020.
