Iran: Five Teachers detained on 8 May released

published 11 May 2007 updated 11 May 2007

Of the seven teachers arrested and taken to Evin prison during a protest on 8 May, five have been released after posting bail of $30,000 each.

The teachers were arrested while trying to gather in front of the Parliament to demand better pay and working conditions, and the release of their jailed colleagues. Hundreds of teachers took part in the demonstration, chanting repeatedly “imprisoned teachers must be released”.

Security forces blocked all streets leading to the Parliament and reports suggest that teachers were attacked and beaten by uniformed and plain clothed security forces. Dozens were arrested; seven were imprisoned.

The teachers's attorney said two teachers, Alireza Akbari and Mohammad Bagheri, remained in prison because they were not able to pay their bail.

The names of the released teacher are:

Aliakbar Baghani Hamid Pourvosough Mohamdtaghi Falahi Mohammadreza Rezaiee Alisafar Montajabi
