Ethiopia: released on bail, teachers grateful for international solidarity

published 20 December 2007 updated 20 December 2007

EI is pleased to announce that Berhanu Aba-Debisa, Wolde Dana and Wibit Legamo have at last been released on bail. With the support of National Union of Teachers (NUT), from the United Kingdom and EI, the three colleagues are free at last and extend their gratitude for the support received during the hardest of times.

Berhanu, Wolde and Wibit shared heartbreaking details of the time spent in prison with their ETA colleagues at a visit to the ETA head office in Addis Ababa where they declared that “we are convinced that the best option to defend ourselves is a strong union”. They also extended their gratefulness to EI and its member organizations.

Their agony and suffering, which mobilized EI members from all over the world in a campaign for their release, has finally come to an end. It is to be noted, however, that they are going to attend Court proceedings the coming week. Regrettably, another colleague, Meqcha Mengistu, has been denied the right to freedom on bail and remains in prison.
