UK: Maintaining world class schools

published 9 October 2013 updated 11 October 2013

Education unions in the United Kingdom have enthusiastically welcomed the recently launched Unite for Quality Education campaign. Union leaders have highlighted the timeliness of this agenda, both on a global scale and nationally in the UK.

"Quality education offers hope and the promise of a better standard of living. There is no stronger foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development than a quality education provided by well trained, valued, supported and motivated teachers," said Christine Blower, National Union of Teachers (NUT) General Secretary, and ETUCE President.

An important contribution to the discussions about quality is the recent report ‘Maintaining World Class Schools’, which was presented at the NASUWT’s Annual Conference in April. It focuses on how developing the agenda for school reform is critically important - especially in a context where there is a need for a genuine and open debate on the future of publicly funded education.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: “Through this major report, we are challenging politicians to commit to the future of public education and to the right of every child and young person to quality education.”
