New officers elected at EI Congress

A President, five Vice Presidents, and a General Secretary for Education International (EI) were all elected at the second plenary session of EI’s 7th World Congress in Ottawa, Canada, on Wednesday, 22 July.

This was democracy in action with five regions and seven different countries represented at the top tier of EI.

Susan Hopgood from the Australian Education Union (AEU) was re-elected as President of EI.

Five vice presidents were also elected, one for each region:

  • ·Mugwena Maluleke from the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) was elected Vice President (Africa).
  • ·Yasunaga Okamoto from the Japan Teachers' Union (JTU) was elected Vice President (Asia-Pacific).
  • ·Marlis Tepe from the Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft (GEW), Germany, was elected Vice President (Europe).
  • ·Roberto Franklin de Leão from the Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Educação (CNTE), Brazil, was elected Vice President (Latin America).
  • ·Lily Eskelsen García of the National Education Association (NEA) in the United States was elected Vice President (North America & Caribbean).

Fred van Leeuwen from the Algemene Onderwijsbond (AOb) in The Netherlands was re-elected as EI’s General Secretary.
