Education International (EI) expresses its deepest sympathy and unwavering solidarity following the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, Tibet, and India that have affected communities across the region.

On 26 August 2026, several Nepali districts along the Nepal-Tibet border were struck by a catastrophic flash flood that swept away everything in its path - homes, schools, bridges and other infrastructures, leaving entire communities in devastation. Tens of thousands of people have been affected by the disaster, with hundreds of people having lost their lives and thousands of others still missing.

Reacting to the tragedy, EI General Secretary David Edwards declared: “Our heartfelt solidarity is with all those facing loss, uncertainty, and displacement, including families grieving loved ones and those whose homes, schools, and livelihoods have been destroyed or severely affected.”

This destruction has also had a severe impact on education. At least 69 schools have been destroyed or damaged in northern Nepal, putting the education of approximately 19,000 children at risk. Accounts have also begun to emerge detailing how the swift action taken by teaching staff in the affected schools helped to save the lives of many pupils.

At a time when schools should provide stability, safety and hope, many students, teachers, and education support personnel are now confronting immense challenges. “During this difficult time, we pay tribute to the teachers, education support personnel, first responders, volunteers, and local communities who are working tirelessly to provide assistance and support to those in need,” stated Anand Singh, EIAP regional director. “Their commitment and compassion are a powerful reminder that resilience grows through solidarity, care, and collective action.”

Education International stands firmly alongside its member organisations in Nepal, including the Nepal Teachers' Association (NTA), the Nepal National Teachers' Association (NNTA), the Nepal School Employees Council (NSEC), and the Institutional Schools Teachers Union (ISTU), as well as the broader education community throughout the region. On behalf of the global education union movement, we express our solidarity with their members and with all the people of Nepal, Tibet, and India. We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost loved ones.

As communities begin the difficult task of recovery and rebuilding, Education International reaffirms our commitment to supporting the rights, wellbeing, and education of every learner and stand with every education worker impacted by this disaster.
