The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) – Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF/FCE) Women in Education Bursary is aimed to help female GNAT members to attain professional status.
The purpose of the bursary it to support female GNAT members teaching in deprived areas and who are pursuing either diploma or degree courses through sandwich or distance in basic education programs, to upgrade themselves to attain professional status.
It is intended that 120 women from various districts and regions of Ghana, will benefit from the educational bursaries.
Objetivos
In order to ensure that these bursaries reach those women working in rural areas who will most benefit from the Activity, the GNAT will target women teachers who:
- have been teaching in a less developed area for the past three years;
- have serious financial constraints;
- are role models for the children and the community where they are teaching;
- will undertake studies that will keep them in the teaching profession after completion
(e.g., Basic Education, Early Childhood Development, Social Studies, Home Economics, Languages, Gender and Development, etc.);
- are active members of GNAT’s women’s wing (GNAT-LAS).
Actividades
An internal publicity for the bursaries will be done through the district and regional secretariats, which will outline the selection criteria for the bursary and the necessary documentation required. Applications should be endorsed by the district and regional secretaries.
A well constituted selection team consisting of members at various levels of the GNAT, will meet to review the applications received and carefully consider the selection of prospective bursary beneficiaries.
After the selection process, the national gender desk coordinator will inform the selected beneficiaries, through their respective districts and regional secretaries. Telephone calls will be made to inform recipients of the dates, time and venue for disbursement of the bursaries. An amount of one thousand Ghana cedis ($1,000 GHS) will be given to each beneficiary. In addition, their transportation expenses from the respective schools to the payment centers will be paid to them as well.
Resultados
As a result of this Activity:
- there will be improvement in the teaching quality of the GNAT female members who serve as role models to the young girls in various deprived areas;
- the bursaries will assist female teachers to enhance their career advancement;
- many female teachers will be able to upgrade themselves, professionally;
- recipients will be empowered and their confidence to take up leadership positions in the union, will be boosted.
