Research Project on Women in the Teaching Profession: An Examination of Women Teachers’ Challenges and their Support Systems Throughout the Caribbean

A research project will be conducted throughout all Caribbean Union of Teachers' Units which will involve the gathering of data, information and facts, as well as the opinions of women teachers and teacher union leaders on the research topic (Women teachers' challenges and their support systems throughout the Caribbean) and then help to generate possible ideas to address the issues and gaps identified.

Objetivos

The teaching service in the Caribbean is dominated by women, and women teachers play a significant role towards the overall development of society. It is therefore important to research the challenges they face. It is also important to assess factors that may be helping or hindering, and advocate for and take corrective measures to address these challenges which can significantly contribute to promoting gender awareness in the education system, and to creating a more equitable society.

  • To collect, analyse and interpret information on challenges faced by women teachers.
  • To understand the adequacy of support systems for women teachers in the Caribbean.
  • To develop possible strategies to address both the challenges and the existing gaps.
  • To provide CUT member Units with information and direction to help them better scrutinize public policies regarding support systems for women teachers.
  • To assist Teachers’ Unions of the Caribbean to prepare union responses.
  • To support advocacy campaigns.

Actividades

This activity will involve the gathering of data, information and facts, as well as the opinions of women teachers and teacher union leaders on the research topic and then help to generate possible ideas to address the issues and gaps identified.

A research consultant will be hired to conduct the research throughout the CUT member Units.

Upon completion of the data and resource collection, a report will be generated and shared among the Units to aid in guiding future strategic plans.

Resultados

The study will generate sound, up-to-date, and credible information and statistics on challenges faced by women teachers and the support systems associated with their professional work. This will help inform the work of the CUT and its Member Units in a way that can benefit women teachers.
