The Union of Teachers of North and East Syria (UTNES), EI affiliate representing more than 40,000 education workers, has been instrumental in supporting a pluralistic, democratic, and inclusive education system in Rojava, the Kurdish-majority regions of northern and northeastern Syria, for more than a decade. Due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in Northeast Syria, teachers, students, unionists, and the entire education system established in Rojava are now facing severe threats.
27 January | Video call for support from UTNES
In this video message, Nesrin Resik, UTNES International Secretary, denounces the recent attacks of the Syrian interim government against Rojava as a cultural and linguistic genocide. She calls on the global education community to help and support UTNES in their fight for the right to education, freedom and democracy: “Now we, as teachers, are in the trenches. We put our pens aside. We are defending our school, our neighborhood. We are defending multilingual education. We are fighting for freedom and democracy.”

The Education International statement calls for an immediate end to violence in Syria and urges Syrian authorities and the international community to make education a central pillar of recovery and reconstruction efforts.
