The recent incorporation of the National Union of Education Institutes (NUEI) to the EFAIDS Programme in Uganda reaches out to non-teaching staff in schools. The Uganda National Teachers Union, working on the Programme since 2006, is confident that the partnership will benefit EFAIDS work.

Last year UNATU commissioned a study entitled 'The impact of HIV/AIDS on Education and Teachers in Uganda' to gather baseline information that will guide the planning and implementation of the EFAIDS programme. The study, which has just been published, provides a valuable analysis of the situation in Uganda.

In June, the Monitor newspaper reported that some 2,000 teachers had turned down government job offers in Uganda. The article echoes the surprise of the Ministry of Education on the apparent rejection of these posts. EI affiliate the Ugandan National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has since reacted to these misleading statements.
